The Georgia Pacific West cleanup site is located on Bellingham Bay in Western Washington. The site was home to a pulp and tissue mill until 2007. Mercury was used for a bleaching process that led to mercury contamination in the surrounding soil and water. The site was bought by Port of Bellingham with hopes of redeveloping the site as an extension of downtown. The site was listed under the Model Toxic Control Act (MTCA) to allow Washington State to faciliate a cleanup approach of the pollution. The site cleanup is overseen by Washington Department of Ecology and Port of Bellingham.
